Knowing your roots, valuing and appreciating the Puerto Rican culture and other cultures is important for our sense of self and those who we daily come contact with. For the past 15 years, Bombazo Dance Company is committed to preserving Puerto Rico's oldest dance and musical genre, its African roots: Bomba! Conserving, advocating and presenting traditional Bomba and its fusion with modern dance aesthetics we bring forth high quality performances as New York's leading Bomba Dance Company.
In continuing our commitment this year we were able to provide a full year of Free community programming, curated two festivals: Bombazo in the Bronx with the partnership of Puerto Rican business Port Morris Distillery, and continuing our mission to connect Puerto Rico with the African, Caribbean and Hispanic cultures in the 2nd annual Bronx Dance and Drum Festival in collaboration with Pregones Theater/ PRTT.The latter, we showcased two full evening length performances of our Caribbean/ contemporary production CROWNS: Telas de Resistencia with funding from NALAC. In addition to our festivals and community programing we have the Bombazo arts curriculum as part of our Arts in Education Program where we provide in school and after school residencies in Bronx, Manhattan and Brooklyn in dance, music and visual art residencies. As well as a comprehensive older adult curriculum with various senior centers and schools who cater to youth with disabilities. As ambassadors of Bomba, Bomabzo-Ambassadors, we have traveled and shared this wonderful legacy in Chiapas Mexico, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Santiago de Cuba!
